A light aircraft has crashed in North West England with two people believed to be on board, police said Tuesday.

Police officers and emergency services have been dispatched to a patch of farmland close to the M62 motorway in the Littleborough area, North West England, the BBC reported.

It is believed there were two people traveling on the plane.

"We are currently in attendance to establish the full circumstances and assess any casualties," Greater Manchester Police said.

It added: "A scene is in place while emergency service workers conduct their enquiries and people are asked to avoid the area as this work is carried out."

The aircraft is a small Cirrus SR 20, according to the report, citing the Flight Radar website, which monitors air traffic.

It took off from Birmingham before losing altitude.
