Ireland on Monday condemned a new law passed by the Israeli parliament to expand the scope of the death penalty, and warned of its potential impact on Palestinians.

"Ireland condemns the law passed by the Israeli parliament to expand the scope of the death penalty and revive its implementation in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory," Irish Foreign Minister Helen McEntee said in a statement.

"The right to life is a fundamental human right and Ireland is consistently and strongly opposed to the use of the death penalty in all cases and in all circumstances," she added.

"I am particularly concerned about the de facto discriminatory nature of the Bill as it relates to Palestinians. Ireland urges the Israeli government and parliament to not implement this law," McEntee warned.

Israel’s Knesset (parliament) on Monday passed a controversial law allowing the death penalty for Palestinian prisoners.

The bill was approved in second and third readings by 62 votes against 48, and one abstention, the daily Yedioth Ahronoth reported.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu voted in support of the law.
