Greece faces persistent poverty with nearly 27% of population living at risk of poverty, social exclusion: Report

ATHENS

Greece faces persistent, evolving and emerging forms of poverty with nearly 27% of the population living at the risk of poverty or social exclusion in 2025, a report noted Wednesday.

Work intensity, low wages, job insecurity and the mismatch between incomes and high prices of necessities and energy continue to trap workers in poverty, despite individual improvements, according to the Greek Anti-Poverty Network in its seventh annual report.

It says the Minimum Guaranteed Income (MGI) covers 60% of the poverty line, an insufficient level by European standards, while child poverty remains high at 22.4%.

Emphasizing the purchasing power of wages and pensions is the lowest in Europe, and the taxation system disproportionately burdens economically weak households, the report argued that social policies implemented for the most vulnerable populations failed to lift them out of poverty.

“There is a need for more effective cooperation at all levels of governance. Empowering civil society and the meaningful participation of those directly affected are prerequisites for achieving the Europe 2030 poverty reduction goals,” it added.
