French police detain EuroPalestine's vice president in controversial raid
Raid on home of Jewish officials of pro-Palestinian rights group sparks outcry
LONDON
Nicolas Shahshahani, vice president of the France-based EuroPalestine Association, was taken into custody Tuesday following a police raid on his home in Ile-Saint-Denis, reportedly over allegations of “apology for terrorism” linked to remarks made during a demonstration on Oct. 7, 2025.
Olivia Zemor, president of the organization, said the raid took place early on Tuesday, when eight masked officers forced their way into the family home. She said she was not allowed to approach her husband as police ransacked their belongings.
“The police justified their actions by referring to statements made at a demonstration on Oct. 7, 2025,” Zemor wrote on the US social media platform X. She added that one officer remarked, “They don’t seem to like Jews very much,” before discovering that both she and Shahshahani are Jewish.
Zemor criticized the apparent conflation of Jewish identity with criticism of Israel, describing it as “dangerous.” She said police found no weapons in the home, only two keffiyehs, and did not allow her husband access to his medication before taking him into custody.
She also accused France’s justice minister, Gerald Darmanin, of seeking to ban EuroPalestine, which has advocated for Palestinian rights and international law for more than two decades. “Does the word ‘law’ still have any meaning in this country?” she asked.
