Ex-Lithuanian foreign minister warns growing interest in Greenland could reshape Arctic strategic balance: Report Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis

ISTANBUL

Lithuania’s former foreign minister Gabrielius Landsbergis warned on Tuesday that growing international interest in Greenland could reshape strategic balances across the Arctic, according to media reports.

“This is not just about land—it’s about resources, shipping routes, and security. The Arctic is becoming a new frontier for global competition,” Landsbergis told Polish broadcaster TVP World.

He said Russia has increased its presence in the Arctic while China is investing in polar research and infrastructure, warning that any move by the US would “trigger reactions from both.”

“The alliance must remain united. Greenland is part of NATO’s northern flank, and any disruption could weaken collective security,” Landsbergis said.

He also reiterated the need for dialogue and cautioned against the use of “ultimatums.”

Greenland, a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has drawn US interest because of its strategic location and vast mineral resources.

US President Donald Trump has previously described owning Greenland as an “absolute necessity” for US economic security, likening it to a “large real estate deal.”

Both Denmark and Greenland have rejected any proposal to sell the territory, reaffirming Danish sovereignty over the island.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to meet Danish and Greenland officials this week, according to media reports.
