The European Union on Wednesday called on Israel to immediately stop its military strikes on Syrian territory, including attacks on key institutions in the capital Damascus, a spokesperson told Anadolu.

"We urge Israel to immediately cease its strikes on Syrian territory, including on key institutions in Damascus, which jeopardise the lives of civilians and risk undermining Syria’s transition," Anouar El Anouni said in a statement.

He urged the Syrian transitional authorities to de-escalate tensions in the Suwayda region, where recent violence has caused a significant number of casualties.

"We call on Israel and all other foreign actors to ensure the respect of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The EU condemns any violations of Syria’s independence, sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity," he added.

Separately, earlier today, in a statement, he said: "The EU is alarmed by the continued clashes in Sweida (Suwayda), which have resulted in many casualties, and strongly condemns the reported violence against civilians."

"The transitional authorities have the responsibility to de-escalate and restore calm, to ensure accountability for all crimes and to take forward an inclusive transition," he said, adding that the EU stands ready to support these efforts.

"In light of Israel's escalating strikes on Syrian territory, we urge all external actors to fully respect Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity," he added.

Israel launched airstrikes on Damascus on Wednesday, targeting Syria’s Defense Ministry and areas near the presidential palace.

The strikes came as Israel resumed attacks in southern Syria’s Suwayda province, warning they will continue unless Syrian forces withdraw.

The Syrian army had deployed troops to the area to restore order after clashes between armed Druze and Bedouin groups killed at least 30 people.

The Israeli army claims the operations are meant to protect the Druze minority.
