European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said Sunday that next week’s ministerial meeting between the EU and the Arab League will be postponed in protest of Syria’s readmission to the pan-Arab body.

Borrell said the Syrian regime was readmitted to the Arab League despite no "meaningful efforts towards solving the conflict" were made by the regime.

"At this moment there is no serious accountability of the regime. This is not perceived lightly by us. That is why the European Union, and the League of Arab States postponed our ministerial meeting at the request of the European Union," Borrell added during his visit to Egypt.

The top European diplomat said the EU position regarding the Syrian regime “has not changed and will not change until they make progress in line with United Nations Security Council resolution 2254."

Last month, the Cairo-based league reinstated Syria after 12 years of suspension over the regime’s brutal crackdown on pro-democracy protests.

On May 19, head of the Syrian regime, Bashar Al-Assad, attended the Arab League summit in Saudi Arabia for the first time since 2011.
