BRUSSELS

The EU Commission said Friday that a livestream between far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) Co-Chair Alice Weidel and Elon Musk may have provided new evidence for an investigation into X's compliance with EU digital platform regulations.

"We're, however, looking at the systems these platforms put in place. And when you're looking at these systems, of course, in the framework of ongoing proceedings, several pieces of evidence could potentially emerge and feed into the current proceedings," EU Commission spokesman Thomas Regnier said at a news conference.

Regnier emphasized that the commission is not responsible for individual types of content.

He added that there are 150 staff members working on implementing various aspects of the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), and during the live broadcast, two or three staff members were assigned to review the systems.

The livestream drew criticism in Germany due to concerns about the potential spread of disinformation ahead of elections next month.

Tensions grow between the EU, Musk

Reactions to Musk, who will also serve in the new administration of US President-elect Donald Trump, started with his posts praising the AfD party and targeting certain European politicians.

Musk's social media posts supporting far-right parties in Europe sparked backlash, with European leaders accusing the billionaire of interfering in elections and domestic affairs.

European politicians, Members of the European Parliament, and experts have urged the EU to take action against Musk’s far-right endorsements on social media.

DSA, investigation into X

The EU’s law, which came into effect last year, imposes strict rules on major digital platforms. The EU can fine platforms up to 6% of their global revenues for violations. In cases of repeated violations, platforms may be banned from operating within the EU.

The EU launched an investigation into X in December 2023, assessing whether X’s efforts to combat illegal and harmful content comply with the DSA.
