'In both Gaza and Ukraine, we see what happens when the fundamental principles of humanity and international law are violated,' says foreign minister

Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger expressed grave concern Thursday over the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and reiterated her country’s firm support for Ukraine’s sovereignty against Russian aggression.
Addressing the UN General Assembly in New York, Meinl-Reisinger said the war in Gaza was threatening not only lives but also the values of humanity and dignity that the international community must uphold.
She stressed that all parties must respect international law and that civilians cannot continue to bear the brunt of the conflict.
“The people of Gaza must have safe and unhindered access to humanitarian aid,” she said, adding that Austria continues to support international calls for a ceasefire and renewed diplomatic engagement aimed at paving the way for a two-state solution.
Turning to Ukraine, she underscored Vienna’s steadfast solidarity with Kyiv, condemning Russia’s ongoing war of aggression.
“Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are non-negotiable,” she declared, noting that the Russian invasion has left millions displaced and thousands killed.
Meinl-Reisinger called on the international community to remain united in upholding the UN Charter and defending the rules-based order.
“In both Gaza and Ukraine, we see what happens when the fundamental principles of humanity and international law are violated,” she said.
“Our response must be to stand together, act decisively, and work for peace.”
