In Sunday’s German general elections, 19 candidates of Turkish origin won seats in the Bundestag or parliament
According to provisional official results, 19 parliamentarians of Turkish origin will serve in Germany’s new federal parliament, from several different parties.
The Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Left Party (Die Linke) each secured seven seats, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Greens won two seats apiece, and the Christian Social Union (CSU) got a single seat.
From the Social Democratic Party (SPD), Hakan Demir, Metin Hakverdi, Macit Karaahmetoglu, Mahmut Ozdemir, Aydan Ozoguz, Derya Turk-Nachbaur, and Serdar Yuksel all won seats.
For the Left Party, the elected members of parliament were Gokay Akbulut, Ates Gurpinar, Ferat Kocak, Cansın Kokturk, Cansu Ozdemir, Cem Hamit Ince, and Mirze Edis.
From the CDU, Serap Guler and Tijen Ataoglu secured seats, while the Greens saw Ayse Asar and Filiz Polat among their elected members.
Notably, Hulya Duber became the first lawmaker of Turkish origin from the Christian Social Union (CSU).
In the last parliament, a total of 18 lawmakers of Turkish descent won seats.
Friedrich Merz's Christian Democrats (CDU/CSU) won 28.5% of the vote in Sunday's general elections, securing a clear lead over other parties but falling short of an absolute majority in parliament needed to govern alone.
