Total output of 71 countries shows 1.6% annual drop, according to World Steel Association data

World crude steel production reaches 148.1M tons in January

ISTANBUL

World crude steel production reached 148.1 million tons this January, according to World Steel Association (worldsteel) data released on Friday.

A total of 71 countries reporting to wordsteel registered a 1.6% year-on-year decrease in crude steel production, the data said.

Among the world's top 10 steel producers, Iran saw the largest annual rise with 39.3% to 2.6 million tons in 2023.

As for the world’s number one steel producer, China saw an annual drop of 6.9% in January with 77.2 million tons produced.

India, second on the list, saw a 7.3% yearly rise in its steel production, capped at 12.5 million tons.

Number three on the list, Japan, calculated a 0.6% annual bump in steel production, with 7.3 million tons.

The figure for the US, however, was down 0.3% year-on-year with 6.8 million tons produced.

Türkiye, the world's number seven crude steel producer, saw a 24.7% annual jump in January in its steel output, reaching 3.2 million tons.
