Tangerines, tomatoes lead Istanbul’s 2025 produce consumption

Most consumed vegetables were tomatoes, cucumbers and potatoes, while mandarins, bananas and watermelons led among fruits

Tangerines, tomatoes lead Istanbul’s 2025 produce consumption

ISTANBUL

Tangerines were the most consumed fruit and tomatoes the most preferred vegetable in Istanbul in 2025, according to data from the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.

The city’s Bayrampasa and Atasehir wholesale fruit and vegetable markets sold a total of 86 product varieties last year, including 37 fruits and 49 vegetables.

A total of 2,774,260 tons of produce were delivered to the two markets in 2025, up from 2,750,633 tons in 2024.

Fruit deliveries declined from 1,030,802 tons in 2024 to 957,874 tons in 2025, while vegetable deliveries rose from 1,719,831 tons to 1,816,386 tons over the same period.

Tangerines led fruit deliveries in 2025

In 2024, the most delivered fruits by tonnage were oranges, tangerines, watermelons, apples and lemons.

In 2025, the ranking shifted to tangerines, bananas, watermelons, oranges, and apples.

Last year, the markets received 112,228 tons of tangerines, 106,792 tons of bananas, 100,517 tons of watermelons, 91,068 tons of oranges and 83,216 tons of apples.

Tomatoes, cucumbers lead vegetables

In 2024, the most delivered vegetables by tonnage were tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers and peppers. In 2025, the order changed to tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes and peppers.

Deliveries in 2025 totaled 484,094 tons of tomatoes, 187,449 tons of cucumbers, 182,489 tons of potatoes and 166,169 tons of peppers.

Among fruits, average prices last year were 36.10 Turkish liras ($0.83) per kilogram for tangerines, 69.95 liras ($1.62) for bananas, 24.69 liras ($0.57) for watermelons, 36.41 liras ($0.84) for oranges, 44.64 liras ($1.03) for apples, 64.67 liras ($1.49) for lemons, 69.98 liras ($1.62) for grapes, 37.28 liras ($0.86) for melons, 121.78 liras ($2.81) for strawberries and 47.37 liras ($1.09) for pears.

Among vegetables, average prices were 52.92 Turkish liras ($1.22) per kilogram for tomatoes, 28.76 liras ($0.66) for cucumbers, 18 liras ($0.42) for potatoes, 41.12 liras ($0.95) for peppers, 11.49 liras ($0.27) for onions, 15.17 liras ($0.35) for cabbage, 33.58 liras ($0.78) for eggplants, 18.05 liras ($0.42) for carrots and 28.32 liras ($0.65) for zucchini.
