Anadolu Agency ready to cover Istanbul revote

ANKARA

Anadolu Agency will share data for Istanbul mayoral revote on June 23 with sensitivity and objectivity, the head of news agency said Tuesday.

Director General Senol Kazanci said the agency will carry the data coming out of the ballot boxes to 2,250 media organizations across the world broadcasting in 13 languages: Turkish, English, French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, BHS (Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian), Kurmanji, Sorani, Persian, Albanian, Macedonian, and Indonesian .

Kazanci said the news agency waited the Supreme Election Council (YSK) to announce the final results of the March 31 polls when the rate of ballot boxes opened reached 99% and reiterated that Anadolu Agency is a media organization that transfers data and does not declare election results.

The practice on March 31 was not different from coverage in other elections, he said.

Providing the fastest and most accurate election and referendum data from ballot boxes to date, Anadolu Agency works with a professional team to provide subscribers with graphs about results.

The original ballot was declared invalid due to clerks presiding over 754 polling centers were not civil servants, as required by Turkish law.

The results in March were canceled after the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party and its coalition partner, Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), appealed to the YSK, citing irregularities and contradictions with legal measures.

Ekrem Imamoglu, candidate of the CHP, and Binali Yildirim, of the Justice and Development (AK) Party, will vie for the Istanbul mayor post after the YSK ruled the rerun of the polls due to irregularities and violations of election law.
