US working on Pakistan meeting with Iran to discuss war off-ramp: Report
Türkiye has also emerged as possible venue for talks amid security concerns among some officials over visit to Pakistan, CNN reports
WASHINGTON
The Trump administration is working to arrange a meeting in Pakistan this weekend to discuss a possible off-ramp to the Iran war, according to a CNN report on Tuesday.
Citing two anonymous senior US officials, CNN reported that Vice President JD Vance, along with other top administration officials, is expected to travel for the talks, though timing, location and attendees remain fluid.
Türkiye has also emerged as a possible venue for the talks amid security concerns among some officials over a visit to Pakistan, according to the report.
CNN reported Tuesday that Iran prefers to negotiate with US Vice President JD Vance rather than special envoy Steve Witkoff or Jared Kushner, citing a “deficit of trust” after earlier talks resulted in the US-Israeli military action.
President Donald Trump said the US is “in negotiations right now” with Iran and that Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Witkoff and Kushner are all involved in the diplomatic effort.
The US has reportedly sent Iran a 15-point plan to end the war, delivered via Pakistan and outlining steps on Tehran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs as well as maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran rejected the US proposal, saying any ceasefire would take place only on Tehran’s terms and timeline, and outlined five conditions for ending the war, including a complete halt to “aggression and assassinations.”
The US and Israel have been carrying out airstrikes on Iran since Feb. 28, killing more than 1,340 people so far. Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, along with Jordan, Iraq and Gulf countries hosting US military assets, causing casualties and damage to infrastructure while disrupting global markets and aviation.
