Thailand seeks special ASEAN meeting as Middle East conflict drags on: Report
Top Thai diplomat proposes special ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting at 'the earliest opportunity' to discuss escalating situation and its potential impact on regional energy security
ISTANBUL
Thailand is seeking a special Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) meeting as the Middle East conflict drags on, according to state broadcaster Thai PBS World on Monday.
Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow has proposed that a special ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting be held at "the earliest opportunity" by the current ASEAN chair, Philippine Foreign Secretary Maria Theresa Lazaro, to discuss the escalating situation and its potential impact on regional energy security as well as safeguard measures, the broadcaster said in its report, citing an informed source.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has also expressed concern that a prolonged conflict could drive up global energy prices, disrupt supply chains, and harm Thailand’s economic growth and inflation outlook.
Regional tensions have escalated since the US and Israel launched a large-scale attack on Iran on Feb. 28, killing more than 1,200 people, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, over 150 schoolgirls, and senior military officials.
Iran has retaliated with sweeping barrages that have targeted US bases, diplomatic facilities, and military personnel across the region, as well as multiple Israeli cities. At least seven US service members have been killed.
