ISTANBUL
New Zealand on Friday bade farewell to the country’s first policewoman who died in the line of duty.
Nearly 2,000 people gathered, amid rain, to bid farewell to Senior Sergeant Lyn Fleming, who died during duty hours on New Year’s Day in Nelson city of South Island.
Fleming was hit by a vehicle in the early hours of New Year’s Day at Buxton Square in Nelson, according to Radio New Zealand.
“Police across New Zealand do an incredible job keeping us safe and it’s heart-wrenching for an officer to lose her life carrying out that duty,” Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said.
A 32-year-old man driving the vehicle has been charged with murder.
