KATHMANDU, Nepal (AA) – Nepal's electoral authority has released the final official results of the March 5 general elections, which saw the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) win 182 seats in the 275-member parliament.
According to the final poll results published by Nepal's Election Commission on Thursday evening, the RSP won 125 seats under the first-past-the-post electoral system and an additional 57 seats under proportional representation.
With this unprecedented majority, the party will announce the new government soon.
Political experts say this is the largest single-party majority since democracy was restored in 1991.
A party or alliance needs 138 votes to form a government. The RSP fell two seats short of a two-thirds majority.
Legacy parties trailed far behind in the first general election since last year's mass protests. The Nepali Congress won 38 seats, the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) 25 seats, and the Nepali Communist Party 17 seats.
Rastriya Shram Sanskriti Party won seven seats, while the Rastriya Prajatantra Party won five.
Last week, 60% of the total 18.9 million voters voted to elect a new parliament to fill the political void created in the Himalayan nation by mass protests in September last year.
Nepal was plunged into a political crisis after Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli resigned due to widespread unrest, and parliament was dissolved before the full term expired.
The election commission's spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai stated that his office is currently preparing to submit the final poll results to the president's office.
Based on polling results. President Ramchandra Paudel will convene the largest party to form a new government.
Balendra Shah, the RSP's senior leader, is set to become the new prime minister.
