India reported two more deaths from Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), bringing the death toll to three, media reports said Wednesday.

A 10-year-old child died Sunday after a week of treatment at a hospital in Kolkata, according to The Indian Express. That was before a 17-year-old died Monday at another hospital in Kolkata while being treated for suspected GBS.

The teen died of septic shock and myocarditis, with doctors suspecting GBS may have been the underlying condition, according to hospital sources. Investigations are ongoing to confirm the exact cause of death.

Both children were from a neighborhood in Bhatpara, a city in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.

A 40-year-old man in the western state of Maharashtra was the first reported fatality from the rare autoimmune disorder on Monday.

GBS cases in Pune, a city in Maharashtra near Mumbai, had risen to 111 as of Tuesday, Health Minister Prakash Abitkar said on social media.

Abitkar previously suggested contaminated water as the likely cause.

Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks the nerves, leading to numbness, weakness and paralysis.

It can be fatal in some cases.
