ISTANBUL 

Eight people were confirmed dead while five are missing in northern Vietnam on Wednesday after Typhoon Matmo triggered floods and landslides, according to media reports.

Three people were killed in a landslide, four in flash floods and one in a lightning strike, The People's Army Newspaper reported, citing a report from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment. The newspaper is run by the Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Ministry of National Defense.

It reported 15,762 houses were flooded, while 402 houses sustained damage.

Flooding remains in 33 communes and 5,455 households in Thai Nguyen, and three communes and 1,034 households in Lang Son.

Nearly 15,000 hectares of rice and crops were flooded and damaged.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has allocated 140 billion VND ($5.3 million) from the 2025 central budget contingency fund to help the four affected northern provinces.
