A 6.5 magnitude earthquake injured three people and damaged houses and places of worship in Indonesia's East Java province on Tuesday, the National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB) said on Wednesday.

The US Geological Survey had reported the quake to be of 6.0 magnitude, at a depth of 13.9 kilometers (8.6 miles).

The jolt occurred 32 kilometers (19.8 miles) from Sumenep Regency's Kalianget.

Authorities are still gathering data and carrying out emergency response operations, agency spokesman Abdul Muhari said in a statement.

As many as 30 buildings, including houses, four places of worship and a health facility, were damaged, according to initial assessments. There was also a power breakdown in the Gayam district, with restoration efforts underway.

Indonesia, located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” experiences frequent seismic activity and has more than 120 active volcanoes.
