SRINAGAR, Jammu and Kashmir

An Indian Army soldier was killed and three are missing after a group of 40 soldiers was caught in an avalanche on Mount Kun -- one of the highest peaks in the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir, bordering China, according to the army.

The Indian Army Training Command wrote last Monday on X that the remains have been recovered in a daring search operation that is underway.

“Despite inclement weather and heavy snow pile up, search and rescue operations continue to locate and recover others trapped under the massive snow deposit,” it said.

The army said Oct. 8 that a contingent of 40 personnel from the High Altitude Warfare School and the Army Adventure Wing were involved in routine training activities near Mount Kun when they were caught in the avalanche.

“Unfortunately, during their training ascent, the group faced an unexpected avalanche. Four of our dedicated personnel were trapped underneath. Immediate rescue operations were initiated and are still continuing,” it said.
