GENEVA
The United States (US) Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met the United Nations (UN) special envoy on Syria on Friday in Geneva, the second day of their summit that is seeking to reach a deal on disposing of Assad’s chemical weapons.
Gathering together with Lavrov and UN-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, Kerry held a press conference.
Kerry, who underlined the ongoing talks on chemical weapons were "constructive" with Lavrov, said the talks would continue.
Kerry and Russian Lavrov said that they were hopeful that talks on Syria's chemical weapons would help revive an international plan for a "Geneva 2" conference to end the war in Syria.
Secretary of State also told that he and Lavrov planned to meet in New York around September 28 and hoped to agree on a date for the Geneva 2 conference then.
Meanwhile, Brahimi, who represented both the UN and the Arab League, said working to remove chemical weapons from Syria would form an important element in efforts to hold new peace talks
Stating that the talks were important also for Geneva 2 conference, Brahimi said "Today's negotiations were beneficial."
