TURKISH FREE DIVER GIVES UP WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT

Doctors said Tuesday that it would be too risky for her to continue record attempt.
Dalkilic would try to break the old free record of 105 meters held by herself. Yet, she set a new record of 106 meters during training, which was also officially verified.
Dalkilic was taken to a hospital in Antalya from Kas, a town on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey where she was preparing for May 1 record attempt, after she suffered a "water blackout."
As she was being taken to emergency with her swimsuit on, Dalkilic said she was fine, it was not decompression sickness and that it was just a water blackout.
A deep water blackout is a loss of consciousness caused by cerebral hypoxia, or inadequate oxygenation, on ascending from a deep free dive or breath-hold dive.
About two weeks ago, Dalkilic and her team started training for her attempt in the Limited Variable Ballast category to 125 meters.
Dalkilic, one of the most well-known names in free diving, came back to diving after an absence of six year from the water. Between 1999 and 2003, Dalkilic set eight free diving world records, among them the first dives ever to 100 meters in Variable Ballast, to 120 meters in No Limits and the first Unassisted Constant Ballast record. But, she was diagnosed with pancreatic tumor that required surgery and a long recovery. After being diagnosed, she retired. However, until yesterday, she was set for her new attempt on May 1 almost six years after her last dive.
