Germany denies their chemicals used for poison gas in Syria

BERLIN (AA) -  German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the chemical substances delivered to Syria from Germany were not used for the production of poison gas.

Merkel said in a statement to the German television channel ARD there was no information indicating that the chemical substances delivered to Syria had been used for the production of chemical weapons.

The German Chancellor noted that in the past the governments of the Social Democrat Party (SPD) and the Green Party "looked very clearly" for what the exported chemicals to Syria were used for.

She reminded that sanctions against Syria have intensified after May 2011.

The German government permitted the delivery of more than 97 tons of chemical substances - which could also be used in the production of chemical weapons - to Syria in the 2002-2006 period, but noted that the chemical substances could be used for civilian and military purposes.
