WASHINGTON
US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi met Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal from war-hit Ukraine at the Capitol building Thursday.
"On behalf of the Congress, I expressed our immense admiration and respect for the courage of the Ukrainian people as they defend democracy in the face of Russia’s cruel aggression," Pelosi wrote on Twitter.
During the meeting, Pelosi pledged security, economic and humanitarian from Congress amid the ongoing war with Russia.
"Today, & every day, the Congress remains steadfast in our bipartisan, bicameral commitment Ukraine & determination to hold Russia accountable," she added.
The Ukrainian prime minister met earlier with US President Joe Biden and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen ahead of Washington's announcement of additional assistance to Kyiv.
At least 2,345 civilians have been killed and 2,919 injured in Ukraine since the war began Feb. 24, according to UN estimates, with the true figure believed to be much higher.
More than 5 million Ukrainians have fled to other countries, with over 7.7 million more internally displaced, said the UN refugee agency.
