ISTANBUL

An Iranian vessel that sailed near the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier was fired upon earlier this week by the US, CBS News reported Thursday, citing two US officials.

The status of the Iranian ship and its crew remains unknown, and it is also unclear which US naval vessel fired on the Iranian ship, the report said.

Officials said a US Navy vessel attempted to fire on the Iranian ship using its 5-inch, 54-caliber Mark 45 gun, but the shots missed multiple times.

A helicopter equipped with Hellfire missiles was then launched and struck the Iranian vessel with two missiles, the report added.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said early Friday that a missile and drone attack caused significant damage to the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, without providing details on the extent of the damage or possible casualties.

The USS Abraham Lincoln is a nuclear-powered Nimitz-class aircraft carrier with a long history of deployments, primarily supporting US interests in the Middle East and the Indo-Pacific.
