US escaped prisoner captured after nearly 2-week manhunt

HOUSTON, United States

Police in the US state of Pennsylvania announced Wednesday that escaped fugitive Danelo Cavalcante was captured after a nearly two-week manhunt.

Pennsylvania State Police announced the capture of Cavalcante, 34, on social media at 7.25 a.m. local time.

"I’m proud to announce the subject is in custody. Repeating, subject is in custody," a Chester County official said, according to NBC News.

Cavalcante made a brazen prison breakout Aug. 31 from the Chester County Prison in Pocopson Township, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) west of Philadelphia.

Surveillance footage of the prison break caught worldwide attention for how he escaped. It showed Cavalcante crab-walking out of the prison by stretching out his hands and feet between two walls and shimmying up to the rooftop. He then scaled a fence and crossed a razor wire barrier.

The prison guard who missed spotting Cavalcante's escape has since been fired.

Cavalcante's daring escape happened days after he was sentenced to life for first degree murder in the stabbing death of his former girlfriend.

He is also wanted in his native Brazil where he allegedly murdered a friend in 2017.
