US commerce chief says trade deal reached with one country: Report

ISTANBUL

US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick stated Tuesday that a trade agreement has been reached with a country and that approval is awaited for the announcement of the agreement, CNBC reported.

As US President Donald Trump has said, every country in the world wants a trade deal with them, he said.

“I have a deal done, done, done, done, but I need to wait for their prime minister and their parliament to give its approval, which I expect shortly,” Lutnick said, adding that he would not disclose which country this agreement was with.

Lutnick said that there are countries that are still working on the details of the agreement, but that these countries should also carry out their own processes.

Lutnick did clarify that he was not interacting with China directly. He said that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had such discussions in his "portfolio."

“My portfolio is the rest of the world’s trade deals,” Lutnick said.

Lutnick's remarks were made about a month after President Donald Trump announced massive tariff increases on the majority of the world on April 2.

Trump later postponed those tariffs for 90 days for all countries except China, while raising China's tariff rate to up to 245% on some products.

The Trump administration has stated that dozens of nations have approached them about negotiating a deal in recent weeks, but no agreement has been publicly announced. Japan, South Korea, and India are among the most probable contenders for deals.
