Trump says reports claiming top US general opposes war with Iran are ‘100% incorrect’

WASHINGTON

US President Donald Trump on Monday denied reports that Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine is against a US strike on Iran, labeling such stories inaccurate and saying that without a negotiated agreement, Iran could face dire consequences.

"Numerous stories from the Fake News Media have been circulating stating that General Daniel Caine, sometimes referred to as Razin, is against us going to War with Iran.

"The story does not attribute this vast wealth of knowledge to anyone, and is 100% incorrect," Trump said on his Truth Social platform.

His remarks came after local media reported that Caine has been advising Trump and top officials that a military campaign against Iran could carry significant risks.

Trump said that while Caine, like others in the administration, would prefer to avoid war, he would be prepared to carry out military operations if directed.

"General Caine, like all of us, would like not to see War but, if a decision is made on going against Iran at a Military level, it is his opinion that it will be something easily won," he added.

- 'I am the one that makes the decision'

Trump pointed to Caine’s leadership of “Midnight Hammer,” which he described as an operation targeting Iran’s nuclear development infrastructure last summer.

The president praised Caine as “a Great Fighter” representing “the Most Powerful Military anywhere in the World” and dismissed reports suggesting discussions of limited strikes or hesitation within the military leadership.

Trump emphasized that any decision regarding military action would ultimately rest with him.

"I am the one that makes the decision, I would rather have a Deal than not but, if we don’t make a Deal, it will be a very bad day for that Country and, very sadly, its people, because they are great and wonderful, and something like this should never have happened to them," he said.

Delegations from Iran and the US are set to reconvene in Geneva, Switzerland on Thursday to resume discussions for a potential nuclear deal amid rising regional tensions and speculation of an imminent war.
