Trump says he struck 'great' trade deal with Indonesia
'Great deal, for everybody, just made with Indonesia,' says US president, announcing 19% tariff on Jakarta after he 'dealt directly' with counterpart

WASHINGTON
US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he struck a "great" trade deal with Indonesia, including a 19% tariff, following direct negotiations with President Prabowo Subianto.
"Great deal, for everybody, just made with Indonesia. I dealt directly with with (sic) their highly respected President," Trump said on social media.
Trump announced the tariff rate in a separate post, adding that Indonesia would also increase purchases of US products under the deal.
Jakarta committed to purchasing "$15 Billion Dollars in U.S. Energy, $4.5 Billion Dollars in American Agricultural Products, and 50 Boeing Jets," he said, adding that US exports to Indonesia would be "Tariff and Non Tariff Barrier FREE."
"For the first time ever, our Ranchers, Farmers, and Fishermen will have Complete and Total Access to the Indonesian Market of over 280 million people."
The announcement comes two weeks before the US president postponed an Aug. 1 deadline for nations to strike new trade agreements with Washington or face heightened tariffs. The original July 9 deadline was pushed back by the White House to give negotiators more time.
Peter Navarro, Trump's trade advisor, said in April after Trump announced his tariff push that the administration would seek to conclude "90 deals in 90 days," but that goal has proved illusory. Two nations, the UK and Vietnam, have concluded interim trade deals with Trump.
Many of the details on the agreements, however, remain to be negotiated.
