Trump says call with Netanyahu 'went very well,' included discussion on Iran nuclear talks

HAMILTON, Canada

US President Donald Trump said Monday that he spoke by phone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, noting the call went "very smooth" and included a discussion on ongoing Iran nuclear talks.

"We discussed a lot of things, and it went very well, very smooth. We'll see what happens," Trump told reporters following an event at the White House after returning from Camp David

"You know, we're trying to do something with a country we just spoke about, Iran," he added.

Noting the difficulty of engaging with Iran, Trump said: "They are good negotiators, but they're tough. Sometimes they can be too tough, that's the problem."

"We're trying to make a deal so that there's no destruction and death. And we've told them that, and I've told them that, and I hope that's the way it works out, but it might not work out that way. We'll soon find out," he said.

A recent media report by the Axios news site claimed that a US proposal for a nuclear deal was presented to Iran last week that would permit limited low-level uranium enrichment within Iran for an unspecified period.

The proposal would also ban Iran from building new enrichment sites and require the dismantling of key uranium processing infrastructure, according to sources quoted by the media outlet.

After a fifth round of US-Iran nuclear negotiations was held on May 23 in Rome under Omani mediation, Trump told reporters that the US has "a meeting with Iran on Thursday,” without specifying whether it will be another round of nuclear talks.

Trump, who withdrew the US from a 2015 nuclear agreement between world powers and Iran, is seeking a new deal. He has said that Iran would not be allowed to obtain a nuclear bomb.
