Trump reaffirms US support for Qatar after Iranian strikes; emir urges de-escalation

ISTANBUL

Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani pressed for diplomatic de-escalation during a call Saturday with US President Donald Trump, following Iranian strikes on Qatar and other regional states, according to the Amiri Diwan, the office of the emir.

The Iranian strikes were in response to US and Israeli strikes against Iran early Saturday.

Trump expressed Washington’s solidarity with Doha in the wake of what the statement described as Iranian aggression.

The two leaders reviewed the fast-moving security developments and their implications for regional and international stability.

Sheikh Tamim stressed that containing the escalation through diplomacy and peaceful means remains essential to preserving regional security.

Earlier, Qatar’s Defense Ministry said an Iranian missile targeted a long-range early-warning radar in the north.

The US and Israel launched the attacks, claiming it was meant to remove “threats” posed by the Iranian “regime.” In response, Iran targeted Israel and the US bases in the region with missiles and drones.

Israel declared a “special and immediate state of emergency” nationwide.

Iran, for its part, vowed a “harsh response” to the aggression and launched missile barrages and drones toward Israel and US bases in the region.
