Trump administration urges Supreme Court to lift data access block on Musk-led DOGE
Solicitor general says lower court injunction impedes urgent federal operations

The Trump administration has petitioned the US Supreme Court to suspend a lower court ruling that bars affiliates of Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) from accessing sensitive personal data from the Social Security Administration, according to US media reports.
In a filing submitted Friday, Solicitor General D. John Sauer argued the injunction issued by a district court lacks legal authority and severely hampers President Donald Trump’s executive powers, NBC News reported.
“This emergency application presents a now-familiar theme,” Sauer wrote. “A district court has issued sweeping injunctive relief without legal authority to do so, in ways that inflict ongoing, irreparable harm on urgent federal priorities and stymie the Executive Branch’s functions.”
The Trump administration is seeking an immediate pause on US District Judge Ellen Hollander’s injunction, which blocks DOGE from accessing sensitive information such as Social Security numbers, medical records, and financial data. The administration argues this data is vital to DOGE’s mission of rooting out government waste and fraud.
Earlier this week, the full Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the administration’s attempt to overturn the injunction in a 9–6 decision, leaving the block in place.
