Police in the US on Sunday night released a person of interest detained earlier in connection with the shooting at Brown University that killed two people and wounded nine others.

"Tonight, we announced that the person of interest is being released. The investigation has been ongoing and remains fully active between all agencies," said police in the town of Providence, Rhode Island, where Brown University is located.

Rhode Island Attorney General Peter F. Neronha said "there is no basis" to consider the released individual a person of interest in the investigation.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley told ABC News that authorities will continue pursuing all leads until they have confidence in identifying the right person.

"Until such time as we have an individual in custody who we're confident is responsible, that we're prepared to press charges and then prosecute, we're going to continue to leave all doors open," Smiley said.

A 24-year-old male was detained Sunday morning.

The shooting occurred shortly after 4 pm (2100GMT) Saturday at Brown University, prompting an immediate response by university police, followed by Providence law enforcement, firefighters and emergency medical teams.

University Provost Francis J. Doyle said all remaining undergraduate, graduate, and medical classes, exams and papers or projects for the Fall 2025 semester would not take place as scheduled.
