None of the National Guard troops deployed to the US capital from the state of West Virginia have requested to return home since two of their colleagues were shot on Wednesday, one fatally, the West Virginia governor said, according to local media reports.

“I haven't heard of anyone (wanting to) step back,” CBS News quoted Patrick Morrisey as saying on Friday. “They wanted to stay. They wanted to complete the mission and serve their state and country.”

President Donald Trump had requested the guard’s deployment to Washington, DC in August, saying they were needed to reduce crime. Pointing to a falling crime rate, city officials said the deployment was not needed.

Between 300 and 400 soldiers from West Virginia were sent, and 180 remain on duty as of Friday, according to the Joint Task Force, District of Columbia.

Morrisey declined to say whether his state would contribute to the additional 500 troops Trump ordered to the capital after the shooting.

“Right now, I'm focusing on the families, the guardsmen, and healing,” he said.

The shooting left 20-year-old Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom dead and 24-year-old Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe critically injured.

Both were members of the West Virginia National Guard.

Morrisey described Beckstrom as someone who “brought positive energy to every room” and said Wolfe “comes from a rich tradition of service.”

CBS News reported that a third guard member stabbed the 29-year-old suspect, an Afghan national living in the US legally, with a pocketknife, while a fourth returned fire and shot him, ending the attack.

Trump said Thursday that the suspect remains hospitalized in serious condition.

Morrisey confirmed that West Virginia troops were directly involved in stopping the attack and praised their actions as “swift, coordinated and heroic.”
