Mexico’s president hails 'good' phone call with Trump after cancelled meeting
Claudia Sheinbaum speaks with US president after his abrupt exit from G7 summit

MEXICO CITY
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said she had a “very good” phone call Tuesday with her US counterpart Donald Trump after a cancelled meeting.
The two leaders were supposed to meet in Canada during the G7 summit, which Trump left unexpectedly.
"I had a very good telephone conversation with the President of the United States, Donald Trump, who informed me that he left yesterday over an emergency due to the situation in the Middle East. We agreed to work together to reach an agreement soon on various issues that concern us," she wrote on social media.
The US government also viewed the phone call positively, with a White House official describing it as “good.”
Relations between the US and Mexico have been significantly impacted by the Trump administration's immigration policies, particularly those targeting Mexican nationals and irregular immigration.
The US has significantly ramped up arrests of undocumented immigrants over the past month.
While US authorities had initially ensured that only immigrants with criminal records would be targeted, immigration officers have arrested both undocumented immigrants and US citizens.
Adding to Trump’s mass arrests, a Mexican national recently passed away while being held at an immigration facility.
Sheinbaum has emphasized her commitment to defending the rights of Mexicans in the US, particularly in the face of potential challenges posed by Trump's policies and statements.
"We will defend with dignity the Mexicans here and on the other side of the border," she said.
A meeting between Sheinbaum and Trump is still being planned.
