Macron tells Trump to 'be careful' in negotiation process to end Ukraine war

WASHINGTON

French President Emmanuel Macron warned his US counterpart Donald Trump on Monday to "be careful" in negotiations to end Russia’s war on Ukraine.

"We want peace, and I think the initiative of President Trump is a very positive one. But my message was to say, ‘Be careful,’ because we need something substantial for Ukraine…for the security of Europe and France,” Macron said in an interview with Fox News.

"And second, let's work together on the future to preserve security guarantees, meaning to be sure that this peace will be respected by Russia," he added.

Macron's remarks came right after his meeting with Trump at the White House on the third anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine war to discuss bilateral relations and the negotiation process toward ending the war.

Macron said he held a "very strategic and decisive" meeting with Trump.

A truce between Russia and Ukraine could happen in the "weeks to come," he said, according to Fox News.

"I think the arrival of President Trump is a game-changer. And I think he has the deterrence capacity of the US to reengage with Russia," he was quoted as saying.
