Lithuania’s president has expressed hope for preventing a US-EU trade war through negotiations.
“I really want to hope that this economic war, if we can call it that, will end with swift negotiations aimed at minimizing losses,” Gitanas Nauseda told public broadcaster LRT TV on Monday.
He stressed that there would be no winner in such a war, no matter who started it.
“This has been tested in the world many times throughout different periods, and it has always ended with the same result,” said Nauseda.
In addition to Canada, Mexico, and China, US President Donald Trump has pledged new tariffs on EU countries, sparking worldwide fear of a damaging trade war.
The small Baltic nation of Lithuania – population 2.8 million – joined the European Union in 2004.
