Colombia will retaliate against Trump’s tariff threat after migrant row: Petro

BOGOTA, Colombia

Colombian President Gustavo Petro vowed Sunday to respond after US President Donald Trump announced “urgent and decisive retaliatory measures" against his country.

The diplomatic crisis erupted due to Petro's refusal to accept US military aircraft carrying deported migrants as part of the Trump administration's immigration crackdown.

The measures imposed by Trump include 25% tariffs on all Colombian goods coming into the US, which are set to increase to 50% within a week, a travel ban, and visa sanctions on members and supporters of the Colombian government as well as the imposition of emergency financial sanctions.

"These measures are just the beginning," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

"We will not allow the Colombian Government to violate its legal obligations with regard to the acceptance and return of the Criminals they forced into the United States!"

Trump also pledged enhanced border inspections on all Colombian nationals and cargo.

He labeled Petro an “socialist,” accusing him of jeopardizing US national security.

Petro in turn said he would impose 50% tariffs on goods from the US.

"Your blockade does not scare me," he said. "I am informed that you are imposing a 50 percent tariff on the fruits of our human labor to enter the United States, and I’ll do the same," he said.

He then instructed the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Luis Carlos Reyes, to raise tariffs on US imports by 25%.

Petro earlier Sunday said he had denied entry to US military deportation flights. He said he would "receive our fellow citizens on civilian planes, without treating them like criminals" and migrants must be returned "with dignity and respect.”

Following the sanctions announcement, some people reported canceled visa appointments on X.

On Friday, the US government began deporting undocumented migrants to their countries of origin.
