Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Wednesday joined a virtual meeting of the Coalition of the Willing on support for Ukraine.

In the meeting, the coalition praised the leadership and initiative of US President Donald Trump and the United States, and discussed ongoing efforts to secure peace in Ukraine ahead of ceasefire talks between Washington and Moscow, set for this Friday in the US state of Alaska, the prime minister’s office said in an official statement.

The statement said: "Prime Minister Carney affirmed Canada’s steadfast support for Ukraine, including through $2 billion in new military support and the disbursement of a $2.3 billion loan through the G7 Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration Loans mechanism.

The leaders reaffirmed that Ukraine’s future must be decided by Ukrainians, borders cannot be altered by force, and diplomacy should be backed by military and economic pressure and credible security guarantees to protect Ukraine’s sovereignty.

According to the statement, the meeting was co-led by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US Vice President JD Vance also taking part.

The Ukraine war began in February 2022 and is now in its fourth year.
