5.7 magnitude earthquake hits northeast Chile
US Geological Survey says quake struck 76 kilometers east-northeast of La Tirana at 119 km depth, no immediate tsunami or damage reported
ISTANBUL
A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck northeast Chile on Sunday, second quake in the region in a few hours, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.
The tremor occurred 76 kilometers (47.2 miles) east-northeast of the town of La Tirana at 1623GMT with a depth of 119 km.
No immediate tsunami alert was issued following the earthquake, and there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The region also experienced a 4.2-magnitude earthquake at 0725GMT earlier in the day.
