NAIROBI, Kenya

The nationwide death toll from flooding in Kenya has risen to 71 as heavy rains continue to trigger flash floods and widespread destruction across several parts of the country, the Ministry of Interior and National Administration said in its latest update Tuesday.

Authorities said the increase follows additional fatalities reported in multiple regions as emergency teams continue rescue operations and assess the scale of the disaster.

In a statement, the ministry said the majority of the victims are men.

“Adult males account for the majority of the recorded fatalities following the tragic floods that have swept through our country,” it said.

The ministry added that the overall toll had risen following new deaths recorded in several areas, saying “the cumulative number now stands at 71.”

Officials said flooding has affected several counties, damaging homes, roads, and key infrastructure while forcing thousands of residents to flee low-lying and flood-prone areas.

Emergency response teams from multiple government agencies remain deployed across the country to assist affected communities, coordinate evacuations, and deliver relief supplies.

Authorities warned the situation could worsen in the coming days after the Kenya Meteorological Department forecast continued heavy rainfall across parts of the country.

The ministry urged residents living along riverbanks and in flood-prone areas to move to safer ground and follow official safety advisories as the government intensifies monitoring and response efforts.
