The information comes from a leak by US whistleblower Edward Snowden who said that US National Security Agency (NSA) demanded that its partner Communications Security Establishment of Canada (CSEC) eavesdrop on the 25 national leaders attending the summit, which included Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
According to documents leaked by former CIA operative Snowden, incumbent Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Joseph Harper allowed the NSA surveillance operation during a six-day spying operation from the US embassy in Ottawa.
In a CBC broadcast in October, US journalist Glenn Greenwald, after contacting the fugitive Snowden now in asylum in Russia, said that the CSEC also co-operated with NSA's surveillance activities in Brazil.
The report said the US operation was no secret to Canadian authorities, as NSA stated in the briefing that the operation was "closely coordinated with the Canadian partner," according to CBC.
