The strongest storm to hit Japan this year is sweeping across the country, bringing torrential rain and strong winds to wide areas.
As of Tuesday morning, around 30 people had been injured by Typhoon Vongfong on the island of Okinawa, which had suffered intense rain and waves.
According to the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper, a 90-year-old man died in the southwestern prefecture of Tottori - pronounced dead after he was was found late Monday in an irrigation channel.
As of 06.00 local time (01.00 Turkish time), Typhoon Vongfong was moving at around 75 kilometers per hour east-northeast off Miyagi Prefecture.
The area was struck by a tsunami wave in March 2011 after Japan suffered a strong earthquake off its northeast coast.
The disaster killed nearly 19,000 people across the country, leveling entire coastal villages.
Japan's Meteorological Agency has advised residents to be on high alert in wide areas from northern to western Japan.
