Hundreds of people demonstrated in Moscow's Manezh Square hours after Tuesday's verdict against government critic Alexei Navalny and his brother Oleg, , an Anadolu Agency correspondent said.

During the "unauthorized" gathering, which was called for via social media, police and protesters clashed and some demonstrators were arrested.

According to Moscow police, nearly 1,500 people attended the protest, which later spread to other Russian cities.

Meanwhile, Alexei Navalny, who was under house arrest in a separate case, violated his sentence and attended the rally. He was later arrested and taken by police back home.

A Russian court found Navalny and his brother guilty of fraud and money-laundering, charges they say are politically motivated.

Alexei Navalny and his brother both received 3 1/2 prison sentences, but only Alexei's sentence was suspended.

Navalny, a Russian lawyer and a well-known blogger, gained popularity, especially among Russian youth, for his work against corruption.
