MADRID
A female politician from Spain's ruling Popular Party and head of the Leon provincial council was shot dead Monday in the northern city of Leon.
Spain's Interior Ministry said in a statement that Isabel Carrasco, 59, killing did not appear to be politically motivated, but she was most likely killed in an act of personal vengeance.
A woman who was fired from her job at the council by Carrasco and her daughter have been detained by the police in connection to the murder.
The Popular Party and the opposition Socialist party have cancelled their plans to hold campaign events in the lead up to the European Parliament election towards the end of May.
