Serena Williams of US won her 50th number one world ranking title in singles after beating Maria Sharapova of Russia in the final of the Madrid Open tennis tournament on Sunday.
The clay court tournament at the Manolo Santana Court of Spanish capital Madrid staged the striving game between world no.1 Serena Williams of US and second Maria Sharapova of Russia on Sunday.
Williams took the first set 6-1 and started off the game by pouncing on the Sharapova serve at every opportunity to race into a 4-0 lead.
At the start of the second set, Sharapova responded quickly and broke the serve of Williams. Sharapova took the fifth game by 3-2.
An hour and 18-minute long match made Williams keep her place at top and she became the 10th woman in history to reach the 50 singles tour title milestone.
