A federal emergency regime has been declared in Russia’s Trans-Baikal Territory in response to escalating wildfires, the Federal Forestry Agency (Rosleskhoz) announced on Wednesday.

“The federal emergency regime was introduced by the Governing Commission at the request of the regional governor, Alexander Osipov,” the agency said in a statement.

The move is intended to expand the deployment of firefighting resources and address both the financial and legal aspects of the emergency response, the agency added.

A regional emergency regime has been in effect in the forests of Transbaikalia since April 7, following the outbreak of multiple fires.

According to Rosleskhoz, 44 wildfires are currently being battled across the region, affecting an area of 194,300 hectares. The situation is particularly severe near the village of Tungokochen, where flames are threatening residential buildings.
