WASHINGTON
President Barack Obama will host King Abdullah II of Jordan at the White House later this month to discuss a wide range of regional issues, including countering Daesh, according to the White House.
During the Feb. 24 meeting, Obama and Abdullah will also talk about ways to resolve the Syrian conflict and address the needs of Syrian and Iraqi refugees in Jordan. "How the U.S. can continue to support the kingdom’s generosity in hosting these refugees, and assist Jordan as it continues its political and economic reform initiatives," will be amongst the topics both leaders discuss, said a White House statement.
Syria has remained locked in a vicious civil war since early 2011 when the regime of President Bashar al-Assad cracked down on pro-democracy protests.
More than 250,000 people have been killed and more than 10 million displaced, according to UN figures.
As of June 2015, the UN had registered nearly 700,000 refugees in Jordan.
