BERLIN
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has fractured a bone in her pelvis when skiing in the Engadin region of the Swiss Alps during her Christmas holiday.
At a press conference, Merkel's spokesman Steffen Seibert described her injury as "severe bruising linked with a partial fracture on the left, rear part of the pelvis."
Merkel will rest at home for three weeks and carry on working from home, the spokesman said, adding that she is using crutches at present.
Merkel's visit to Poland this week and the visit of Xavier Bettel, Prime Minister of Luxembourg, to Berlin were postponed due to her injury, said Seibert.
This is the second high-profile skiing accident in the past week along with seven-time Formula One (F1) World Champion Michael Schumacher who also sustained an accident when he was skiing in France on Sunday last week.
